experience does go a looooong way into helping you understand something. It does give you a vantage point on certain whatever experience you went through. One thing it does not do, is give you sole ownership of discussing the subject. We have language and keep history for the sole reason that direct experience is not a prerequisite for having thoughts on a subject. You do not have to be American to speak of their politics, you do not have fought in a war to be against one. You do not have to be a painter to discuss art. You do not have to be a gourmet chef to dislike McDonald’s. I hope you see where I am going with this.
Let me reiterate that experience can give you a unique point of view, group experience can give you a shared point of view with others but in no way shape does it make it the one right point of view. Your own point of view is changed by your past life, your vantage point and participation during the actual experience and what you’ve had since. For example, in a war situation, you could be in a family wit a history of serving in the military and you decide to enroll and serve because its what you’ve always wanted. A fellow solider may have joined joined the military for college money. You are then both sent in the same regiment to fight for God and Country. You may have a positive point of view of partaking in a life long dream whereas he may have a more apprehensive if not negative point of view. During one of the many firefights, you get shot and have to return back home. Through the rehab and time spent away, the life you left is no longer there. After you have been back for 3 years and are finally taking your first steps aided by your fellow soldier who was in the same firefight helping you take your first steps. The soldier who saved you by carrying you out after killing five of the enemy combatants. The soldier who promised to stay by your side after you convinced him with your stories of how grand it was to be a soldier. The soldier who is now a hero to his family and country, finished with college, has a wife and a fulfilling job. You were involved in the same exact battle but may have drastically different opinions on the battle itself, of war itself. This is not even considering the opinions of the enemy or friendly combatants that survived the battle, or the families of those that did not.
My point is the fact that if someone did not experience something, if they did not study a certain subject, if they were not born into a certain culture, is not enough to disqualify them from having an opinion on a that certain subject. It may make you value it less but it is still their opinion to have.
